5 Things To Do on the Eastern Shore of Virginia

Searching for things to do on the Eastern Shore while you stay at the Bay Haven Inn of Cape Charles? Look no further than these five diverse activities. Whether you enjoy water or land-based adventures, discover an activity that suits your interests. Stay close to Cape Charles with experiences located on the lower shore, or drive to the upper shore for even more things to do. Any one of these will create lasting memories.

#1 Walk the Beach

Cape Charles Beach is known as a calm beach with shallow water close to the shore, even at high tide. Visitors also note that this beach is cleaner than a lot of the others in town. You’ll likely find small hermit crabs and sea snails in the white powdery sand if you look close enough. For a special treat, plan to go at sunset and watch as the sun sinks below the western horizon.

#2 Ice Cream Date

Brown Dog Ice Cream has been a local favorite for the last decade. They make all their ice cream from scratch using locally sourced ingredients. In addition to traditional flavors, you’ll love to try unique “flavors of the day” that are made in small batches while supplies last. Grab a cup or a cone and stroll the streets. The Cape Charles fishing pier isn’t far from the shop and a nice walking distance away.

#3 Take a Hike

Chincoteague is located on the upper shore, about an hour and a half drive north from the Inn. There are many paved hiking and biking trails within the National Wildlife Refuge. The Wildlife loop, for example, is a 3.25-mile loop that meanders around Snow Goose Pool, a marsh filled with all kinds of bird species. Explore more of the hiking trails that the Eastern Shore has to offer.

#4 Go Kayaking

Southeast Expeditions offers a couple of different tours to choose from on your next paddling adventure. Paddle 45 minutes from Bayford Warf to Chatham Vineyards. Indulge in complimentary wine tasting and snag a free bottle of wine before paddling back to the Warf. The tour is aptly named “Paddle Your Glass Off.” If wine isn’t your thing then try the Wildlife Refuge and Barrier Island Tour. Become mesmerized by plentiful local flora and fauna on this tour. Spot crabs, fish, and oysters! Try a bird-watching adventure if that’s more your speed.

#5 Have a Fishing Adventure

Whether you are interested in fishing sunrise to sunset, or anytime in between, Cape Charles Fishing Adventure is ready to cater to your needs. They provide charters that target many species of fish including shark, flounder, tarpon, rockfish, and speckled trout, just to name a few. A successful charter is their number one goal! There’s nothing quite like the thrill of reeling in “a big one.”

At the End of the Day

After spending time exploring the Eastern Shore, relax on the porch and view the fabulous gardens at the Inn. Butterflies and hummingbirds frequent the garden space and are especially fun to watch. Then rest up in our comfortable guest rooms so you can tackle another day of Eastern Shore exploration. Get recharged for your next adventure and book a stay at the Bay Haven Inn of Cape Charles.
