Birdwatching in Winter: Discover the Migratory Birds of Cape Charles

Winter on Virginia’s Eastern Shore brings a peaceful beauty to the landscape, and for bird enthusiasts, it’s an especially exciting time to visit. While many people think of spring and summer as the peak birdwatching seasons, winter offers its own unique rewards. If you’re staying at Bay Haven Inn of Cape Charles and love observing wildlife, you’re in for a treat. Let’s explore why winter birdwatching is a must-do activity, answering all your why, when, what, and where questions.

Why Birdwatch in the Winter?

You might be wondering why would birdwatching in the winter be special? While the colder months aren’t usually associated with vibrant wildlife, winter offers a chance to see migratory birds that you won’t find here at other times of the year. You may be surprised to learn that the temperatures range from 40 to 60ºF during the winter months here in coastal Virginia. Many species come south to escape harsher northern winters, making the Eastern Shore a prime location for spotting rare and interesting birds. Plus, with the leaves off the trees and fewer crowds at our beloved nature preserves, it’s often easier to spot and track birds.

When is the Best Time for Birdwatching in Winter?

Winter birdwatching on the Eastern Shore is ideal between mid-November and mid-March, when migratory birds arrive to escape colder northern climates. The best time to observe bird activity is during the early morning hours, especially around sunrise, when birds are actively feeding after a chilly night. This is also true for going during low-tide. The mild, sunny days that follow cold fronts often offer excellent visibility and increased bird movement, making them perfect for spotting raptors, waterfowl, and other species. Coastal areas, marshes, and fields (we have all three!) are particularly active at dawn and dusk, providing birdwatchers ample opportunities to see birds in their natural habitat.

What Migratory Species to Look Out for this Winter

The Eastern Shore is a vital stopover for many migratory bird species, especially during winter. Some of the most notable species to keep an eye out for include:

  • Snow Geese: These striking white birds travel in large flocks and are a stunning sight as they fill the sky.
  • Tundra Swans: Majestic and graceful, these large white swans migrate to the Eastern Shore in the winter months.
  • Waterfowl: Ducks, including Northern Pintails, Buffleheads, Harlequin Ducks, and Redheads, are commonly seen migrating through the marshes and waterways.
  • Raptors: Bald eagles, Northern Harriers, and Peregrine Falcons are often spotted hunting along the shorelines.
  • Songbirds: Wintering songbirds like the Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Dark-eyed Junco, and Orange-crowned Warbler can be seen flitting through the brush.
